Sharon K Penman
Although completely ignorant where history is concened, I can totally recommend Sharon's books. Not only are they a thoroughly great read, but a wonderfully colourful and evocatively beguiling introduction to mediaeval history.
Beg, steal or borrow them, but once you start to read them, you won't want to put them down.
I personally read 'The Sunne in Splendour' - all 886 pages - in one overnight session! Forget Shakespeare, Sharon's take on Richard III is much more interesting.
If you are in the least bit interested in Wales you will want to learn a little of Welsh history.
Specific to Welsh history is her acclaimed trilogy of 'Here be Dragons', 'Falls the Shadow' & 'The Reckoning'. These novels inspired the 'Princes of Gwynedd Trails' consisting of five tourist routes connecting 12th & 13th Century sites of historic interest.
